Barak raised issue of Pollard's release

WASHINGTON - Prime Minister Ehud Barak discussed with President Bill Clinton Israel's desire for the United States to release Jonathan Pollard from his prison sentence on charges of spying for Israel, a U.S. official said.

"The prime minister did raise it," U.S. National Security Adviser Sandy Berger told reporters on Monday after a joint news conference by Clinton and Barak, adding that Clinton had made no commitments on the issue.

Berger said Clinton had not yet received a report about Pollard from White House counsel Charles Ruff, who last November asked the relevant U.S. government agencies to offer their views on whether Pollard should be released. (Reuters.
